The BDR are collaborating with Procter and Matthews Architects to develop a handbook for community groups wanting to engage with the development of their neighbourhoods.

The work is commissioned by The Glass-House and forms part of a wider programme of work to deliver Neighbourhood Planning support as outlined by recent government policy.

UK_Finland Exchange

The Architecture Foundation recognised the BDR as an innovative alternative architecture practice and invited us to put forward a portfolio of work for consideration to take part in a UK_Finland architectural exchange.

AHRC PhD in Community Led Design

The BDR in collaboration with The Glass-House have secured an AHRC funded PhD studentship into Community Led Design. The PhD forms part of the Connected Communities call that the AHRC have put forward.

Buildings by Design Courses

BDR have completed two ‘Buildings by Design’ courses for The Glass-House Community-Led Design. In February BDR went to Newcastle to work with groups from the North East who have a building project in their community. In March we went to Trafford Hall National Communities Resource Centre to work with a group from Cheshire to bring different stakeholders together in creating a vision for refurbishing their community centre.

Building Tomorrow Article

A Lesson in School Design, has been published in the inaugural ‘Building Tomorrow’ publication. The BDR team, led by Prue Chiles, authored the article identifying recent trends in school research and design. The piece weaves together the strands of research, design and practice that underpins the work of the BDR.

BDR Presentation at the University of Portsmouth

BDR Director, Prue Chiles, delivered a presentation to staff at the School of Architecture at the University of Protsmouth, who have recently established a project office/design research unit. Prue presented a range of BDR projects, exploring the approaches, practices and mehtodologies.

Mission Addition [pictured above] is one example of an innovative collaborative Design and Build project based on maths principles, developed with teachers and pupils.

New Live Projects Website Launched

Pakhtoon Schools Project Exhibition

The Pakhtoon Schools Exhibition was launched on 28th October, following the highly informative lecture by professor Ihsan Ali from the Abdul Wali Khan University of Mardan in Pakistan. The exhibition presented the research, design development for a prototype school to be built in the Pakhtoon Region and the accompanying symposium enabled a partnership between the BDR, University of Sheffield, Ramon Mohamed and Abdul Wali Khan University, to be established to carry the project forward.
